Economic Development

WUPPDR was created to support economic development: The purpose of the regional commission is to foster stable and diversified local economies within the region.

WUPPDR serves as a designated economic development district under the U.S. Economic Development Administration and maintains a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for Planning Region 13.

Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy

DSC_0950A Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) is a plan developed through a broad-based continuous planning process addressing the economic opportunities and limits of a region. The guidelines for developing a CEDS include effective general planning practices that can be used by any community to design and implement a plan to guide its economic growth.

The CEDS for the Western Region is required by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) in order to receive assistance under its public works, economic adjustment, and most planning programs. Each year WUPPDR is required to prioritize economic development activities for the region. The CEDS is adopted by local units of government before being submitted at the federal level.

Project Administration

WUPPDR provides program administration, management, support and financial information to satisfy the requirements of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), Economic Development Association (EDA) and numerous other state and federal funding agencies.

North Country Renaissance Zone

DSC_0947Through the Michigan Renaissance Zone Act of 1996, twenty Renaissance Zones have been created in economically distressed urban and rural areas across the State of Michigan. The North Country Renaissance Zone was created in 1996 and includes nine subzones in Gogebic, Houghton and Ontonagon Counties.

Renaissance Zones were created to attract new business investment and create jobs in the regions they serve. Renaissance Zones are regions that have been designated by the State to be tax free for any business currently in or moving into the site.

There are still opportunities available in the North Country Renaissance Zone. Please visit the website and download a brochure at www.taxfreeupnorth.com for more information.
