Housing Services

WUPPDR administers rental programs throughout its six-county region to improve quality of existing rental units.

Rental Rehabilitation Program

WUPPDR serves as the administrator for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation rental rehabilitation projects in the Villages of Calumet and Laurium.  WUPPDR also administered a conversion of a historic school building in Calumet into apartments and is currently creating additional apartments into the same building.  WUPPDR previously administered a rental rehabilitation project that created two new units upstairs of a business in the City of Houghton. Building owners are the direct  beneficiaries of this program, but ultimately the program endeavors to improve rental housing stock in targeted areas of the region. Section 3

This component of the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968 is a requirement of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that intends to provide employment and other economic opportunities to low- and very low-income persons through the benefit of HUD housing assistance or assisted projects. This is accomplished by requiring contractors to attempt to hire low-income residents to fill new positions related to publicly funded housing construction projects.

Section 3 applies to the rental and housing rehabilitation programs described above. For residents of public housing and other low-income residents of the rehabilitation program counties, Section 3 brings the potential for increased employment opportunities.
